Another quite immoral aspect of capitalism is the way it values property over people. For instance, the broadcasting corporations valued my songs and scripts over my life. As a result, I have endured tremendous suffering over the last seven years since I shared my songs online. This policy is degrading to human life and offers no real reward for its practice. Property can not be enjoyed when it becomes too precious and valuable. At that point, it turns into more of a liability than an asset, demanding sacrifices on the part of the owner. In effect, the owner becomes possessed by his possessions. While it is desirable to improve one's living conditions, I think that capitalists go about it too blindly and too recklessly, hurting too many others on the way to their fortunes. It's no secret that most major corporations are in constant trouble with the law. Again, our legal system tolerates their behavior by limiting their punishments to small fines - at least by their standards. There doesn't seem to be any moderating voice, other than my own, to guide common citizens away from the trap set for them by capitalists. The overpowering influence of corporate advertising pummels them with the message that they can't be happy unless they hold some kind of property. This, when added to the normal drive for success, steers large groups of hapless souls down a dead end path of empty consumerist folly. |
