How does an economic system like capitalism, with so many moral faults, stay in operation? By deception. Professor Noam Chomsky said that people are inherently moral. He offered the example of how all but a psychopath would feel pity for a starving child. Then he explained that capitalists, in the pursuit of profits, use their influence to not only deprive such a victim of sympathy but to turn him into a threat. I couldn't help but see myself in the starving child role as I heard these words, reflecting on how brutally I have been victimized by the broadcasting business and how abandoned I am in the present. Capitalists are ugly monsters who desire a decent image. This may be the origin of the popular phrase, 'the clothes make the man'. Yes, no one would have thought Ted Bundy was a serial rapist. He dressed neatly and he socialized with a large clique. He was mild mannered and he had a girlfriend. When they betray thousands of their workers by laying them off after decades of loyal service, what do they call it? Downsizing. It almost sounds positive, as if they were merely trimming excess fat. When the SS consigned Jews to the gas chamber, they called it special treatment. I don't need to tell you how dishonest advertising is. Just once I'd like to see a commercial that doesn't peddle a product as though it were the answer to all my prayers. And the media might be accurate with the information they choose to share with you, but they are deceiving you by making you think that only their news stories are important, especially when they pan the celebrity news I've been forced to report here in this account. This dishonesty is forced onto us when we must compete for jobs. Does anyone tell the truth on their resume? I doubt it. I think employers would be disappointed if we did. And the way certain people lie about their possessions or achievements to hide the 'horrible shame' of their mediocrity seems to have reached epidemic proportions. Deception plays a positive role against a wartime enemy. So does killing. But here at home, deception is crime and killing is murder. And I may have to spend the rest of my life repeating it over and over again to the world, thanks to the adverse influence of corporations on our culture. |
