(A classroom.) Chipper: You children should never forget how lucky you are to live in the best country in the world, with plenty of space and food and lots of toys to play with and gadgets to make your lives easier. This is the best time in history for small children like you. If this were two hundred years ago, you'd all be working in the saw mill and would have nothing to eat but gruel. And if this were a thousand years ago, they'd be putting apples on your heads and using you for archery practice. But instead you have parents and teachers who love you and take care of you. You can be anything you want when you grow up. Maybe you'll be an astronaut or a soccer player or even a schoolteacher like me! And all you have to do is smile. Come on, let me see those smiles! Did you hear what I said, Trevor? I said all you have to do is smile. (The boy remains glum.) Because if you don't smile, people will hate you and want to punish you, and instead of being a congressman, you'll end up scrubbing public toilets for minimum wage like my stupid brother-in-law! Trevor, go stand in the corner! (Trevor listlessly complies.) What is the matter with that boy? Girl Student: (through an exaggerated smile) He just found out he has leukemia. |
